Welcome to the BHS Mathematics Department

In today’s world, mathematics plays a greater role than ever before.  Mathematics is behind most of the technologies we take for granted, such as sending emails, talking on cell phones, making online financial transactions, and using internet search engines. The technologies of the future will depend on mathematics even more than today. Though mathematics is important in the high-tech sectors of our economy, basic mathematics literacy is a valuable skill for everyone to have, regardless of what profession they are in. To make wise decisions about credit card or mortgage debt or to invest our money for the future, we need a basic understanding of the mathematical concept of compound interest. When we need to decide what brand of car to buy, having a basic understanding of statistics can help us distinguish between the good data and the bad data that is out there. Mathematics is everywhere!

The goal of the Mathematics Department at Bassett High School is to empower our students mathematically so they can be competitive in the 21st century. It is necessary for students to have a deep understanding of mathematics and to be able to think mathematically. For this reason, the Mathematics Department at Bassett High School offers a strong, demanding program in the study in mathematics. Our courses prepare our students for life after high school, preparing them for the rigors of college and the challenges of the workforce. To meet these challenge our courses include: Algebra 1, Geometry, Geometry Honors, Algebra 2, Algebra 2 Honors, PreCalculus, Precalculus Honors, Statistics, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB,  AP Calculus BC, and Applied Math.
